Baccarat derives from the Italian word baccara signifying the point values of face cards. Favored by the nobles during the reign of King Charles VIII, baccarat is considered the game of the "whales" - the highest of the high rollers. The most popular baccarat variations are: Punto Blanco (or the American Baccarat), Chemin de fer (preffered by European casinos especially French casinos) and baccarat en banque (much like Baccarat Chemin de Fer with the exception that one gambler will remain the dealer and banker for the entire shoe).
Baccarat explained: Baccarat is a game of chance with no skill requirements. The player and dealer are given two cards each, the objective of baccarat being to get as close as possible to the number nine. Queens, kings and jacks have a value of 10, aces have 1 and the rest are taken at face value. The player gets the total value by adding the values of the two cards together. If a two-digit sum results, only the value of the last digit is taken into play. The player with the highest value is declared the winner.
